Our Math classes take a unique approach – instead of solving many questions in each class, we focus on one question per class. We start by developing a generic framework around the concept: from learning the fundamental math principles, to translating the word problem into math equations, and solving it in multiple ways (brute-force method, logic, pattern recognition, algebra, geometry, and coding).

Math Class Materials

Students are encouraged to bring their notebooks to take notes and solve questions. Our classes are delivered on 4K screens and teachers will help the students if they are stuck on any concept

Math Grade 3 · Fractions

You have 3/4 of a cake. You eat 1/4 of the whole cake. How much of the cake is left?

  • A3/4
  • B1/2 (correct answer)
  • C4/4
  • D1/4

Correct. The denominators are already the same, so subtract only the top numbers: 3/4 − 1/4 = 2/4. Two quarters make one half, so 2/4 = 1/2.

Every wrong answer is explained too. Choosing 4/4 tells a child they added instead of subtracting — and says so, in those words.

Why would we ever want a wrong answer?

  • Sometimes we do not need the exact number
    • “About how many children are in this school?”
    • “About how much will these groceries cost?”
  • A number that is close enough is called an estimate
  • Rounding is how we make an estimate
    • We swap a fiddly number for a nearby friendly number
    • Friendly numbers end in 0, like 30, 700 or 5000

Lessons open with a reason to care before they reach a rule. This one asks why an approximate answer is ever the right one.
