Vocabulary, taught properly

Vocabulary is the part of English that quietly decides how well a child reads everything else, and it is the half most practice apps reduce to matching a word to a definition. Knowing a definition is not knowing a word.

We teach a word the way it actually behaves: what it means here, what it means in a different sentence, which word is close but not the same, and which small piece of the word tells you what it means the next time you meet it.

Every question explains all four choices, so a child sees why the near-miss answer is a near miss. That is where the learning is.

checkmark

The word in context. The same word in different sentences, because meaning shifts with the sentence around it

checkmark

Choosing the right word. Synonyms and antonyms, and shades of meaning between words that look interchangeable

checkmark

Words with more than one meaning. Multiple-meaning words, homophones and idioms

checkmark

Working a word out. Prefixes, suffixes and roots, including Greek and Latin roots, so an unfamiliar word is solvable

Vocabulary is included in the English / ELA subscription at no extra charge, and it runs from word families and opposites in the early grades up to academic word choice, tone and nuance by Grade 8. It is also the skill the SSAT and ISEE verbal sections lean on hardest.
